Although Wellington is not the biggest city in New Zealand, it is the capital. (It’s amazing how many people think that Auckland is the capital of New Zealand). Besides being the capital, it is also the windiest city in New Zealand. We stayed in Wellington for 5 day and throw-out these 5 days, the wind speed was well above average.
Despite the constant wind and bad weather, Wellington is one of our favourite city’s in New Zealand. Mainly because it has beautiful walkways, lots of amazing, historical buildings, great architecture and where ever you are, you are never too far from a 4-star worthy restaurant or cafe.
After spending 5 days in Wellington we have put together a list of places that we think should be on your “Things to do in Wellington” list.
List of things to do in Wellington
1. Hike/Drive up to Mt Victoria
Mt Victoria lookout offers a 360-degree view over this beautiful city. We recommend to hike Mt Victoria on your first day as this will give you a better understanding of the layout of the city. Be worn, it is very windy up there 🙂
2. Visit Te Papa Museum
This national museum will fill your curiosity about the history and culture of New Zealand. Ouh, and the best thing about it is that it’s absolutely free.
3. Tour the Parliament Building
If you like great architecture and possibly politics then this is for you.
4. Visit Cuba Street
Probably the most famous street in Wellington. It is known for great shopping, mouth-watering food, great coffee and stylish bars.
5. Ride a Cable Car
A pocket friendly ($9 NZ) activity that will take you for a short journey over Wellington city and Botanic Gardens.
6. Get lost in the Botanic Gardens
With over 25 hectares of gorgeous land on the side of the hill between Thorndon and Kelburn, Wellington Botanic Garden could keep you occupied and amazed all day.

9. Take a unique photo at the Weta Cave
At the Weta Cave you can take a selfie with life-sized sculptures, watch exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary and go through mini-museum.
10. Go to the Beach
With its many beaches Wellington has you covered. In other words there are plenty of beaches to choose from. Go for a quick surf at the Titahi Bay or chill at the Oriental Bay (just a few minutes’ walk from the city) or look for your own little sand strip.
If you’re looking for a place to stay while in Wellington we recommend to visit The Hotel Guru website. However if you prefer to save money on accommodation then Airbnb is also a great option.
